Overview of the Testing Process

Step One: The Consultation

Once you speak with our care-coordinator and feel comfortable getting started, you will be scheduled for your consultation with the testing specialist. Consultations are conducted through a convenient and private video session. If you and the testing specialist agree you are the right fit for the full testing process, you will then move forward with the next phase.

Step Two: The Evaluation and Assessment

During this process you will meet with the clinical neuropsychologist you have been matched with, either through telehealth video sessions or in-person at our San Francisco office. The full process varies in the amount of time it takes to complete depending on the complexity of testing that needs to be done. This will be discussed during the consultation, so you will have a better understanding of how long it will take to get an accurate and valid diagnosis. It consists of a clinical interview, a battery of forms and tests, and collateral interviews. Once all testing and data gathering is complete, the clinician interprets the results and integrates this information into a comprehensive evaluation which includes diagnosis and treatment recommendations. This thorough process is considered the gold standard for diagnosing all types of neuropsychological disorders.

Step Three: The Feedback Session

After completing the consultation and testing process for autism, you will have a final feedback session with your clinician. In this session, they will review any diagnosis they have come up with, help you understand their reasoning, and answer any questions you have about your results. They will recommend next steps, such as working with another care provider or therapist, and give you a better understanding of how this affects your day to day life. You will leave the testing process with a better understanding of your experience and what to do about it.

Psychological Testing & Evaluations FAQs

Psychological testing is a structured evaluation that uses interviews, questionnaires, and standardized assessments to understand mental health conditions, learning differences, or cognitive strengths and weaknesses. While therapy focuses on ongoing treatment and skill-building, testing provides a clear, data-driven diagnosis and treatment recommendations.

Adults or parents may consider testing if they notice persistent concerns such as memory problems, mood changes, attention difficulties, or social challenges. Testing is helpful when symptoms overlap, such as distinguishing between ADHD, anxiety, depression, or autism, or when a precise diagnosis is required for school, work, or treatment planning.
The timeline varies depending on the complexity of the evaluation and the type of concerns being assessed. Most assessments require an initial consultation, one or more evaluation sessions, and a feedback session. Your clinician will discuss an estimated schedule during the first appointment so you know how long it will take to receive results.
Yes. SF Stress & Anxiety Center offers both in-person and secure telehealth options. Many clients choose video sessions for convenience, and the validity of the results is maintained whether testing is done online or at the San Francisco office.
Absolutely. A formal evaluation can provide the documentation needed to request academic accommodations such as extended testing time or workplace supports like flexible scheduling. Accurate reports can make it easier to access resources and advocate for the right support.
Comprehensive testing can help diagnose ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, anxiety disorders, depression, PTSD, memory concerns such as dementia, and other cognitive or developmental conditions. Your clinician will recommend specific assessments based on your unique concerns.
SF Stress & Anxiety Center is working to become in-network with major insurance providers. Coverage can vary depending on your plan and the type of evaluation. Our care coordinators can explain current insurance options and help you join the waiting list for when additional plans are accepted.
Before your appointment, gather any previous testing records, medical history, and a list of current concerns. Think about examples of symptoms you have noticed. This preparation helps the testing specialist design the most appropriate assessment plan for you or your child.
Yes. Many people experience overlapping symptoms such as anxiety and ADHD or depression and trauma. The evaluation process is designed to look at the whole picture, ensuring that all relevant diagnoses and recommendations are addressed.
After the feedback session, you will receive a detailed written report with diagnoses and practical recommendations. Your clinician will help you plan next steps, which might include therapy, medication consultation, or referrals to specialists such as ADHD or autism testing providers if more focused evaluation is needed.

Why comprehensive testing?

If you want to seek out the most useful treatment and resources, you need to accurately diagnose the problem.

While there are questionnaires and other informal measures, these don’t deliver a high degree of confidence and reliability. When the picture is more complicated, it requires a skilled and knowledgeable expert to provide an accurate diagnosis.

An accurate diagnosis will allow you to better understand why you are the way you are, and identify resources to help you excel.
