Tom Winner, LMFT

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist LMFT99385
About
I work with couples and individuals from all walks of life, but a common theme is that many of my clients feel stuck. Some feel trapped by depression or anxiety. Some feel overwhelmed by stress. Some want to improve their romantic relationships or find the right partner but can’t seem to make progress, while others struggle with sexual difficulties. Some are stuck trying to figure out who they are and what they want out of life, and some know what they want but are having difficulty taking the next step. I want to help you get unstuck.
My Approach
I believe that therapy should be a safe space where clients can express what is on their mind without judgment. I take a flexible, collaborative approach to therapy and adapt to the specific needs of each client while using my creativity to challenge my clients to engage in self examination and embrace new possibilities. I will help you define your own set of goals for therapy and seek to empower you to achieve them.
Why I Love This Work
I genuinely love people and consider myself extremely lucky to have the opportunity to connect with individuals and couples on such a deep level through my work. Witnessing my clients’ courage, resilience, and creativity is an honor and a privilege. I am a strong believer in the power and possibility of change, and I find that belief is validated and reinforced by my work.
What I Want For You
I want for you to be able to look back on where you were before you began therapy and see a positive transformation. Perhaps you have overcome depression or anxiety, learned to manage stress in your life more effectively, or that you feel like you are in the driver’s seat and are poised to move forward after a difficult decision. Perhaps you have reinvigorated or renewed your family or romantic relationships. Perhaps you have found new courage to live your life in an affirming way. Regardless of the specifics, I hope that you will be able to look back at clear progress, and that you will be able to look forward with new tools to overcome future challenges as well.
My Specialties, Background and Personal Interests
I have training in a variety of treatment approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Narrative Therapy, Family Systems Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Master Conflict Therapy, The Intersystems Model, and Systemic Sex Therapy/Sensate Focus. I also have experience incorporating meditation, guided imagery, and mindfulness based practices drawing from both Eastern and Western mindfulness traditions to supplement these approaches. I have taught undergraduate courses on Marriage and Family Development at Philadelphia University and have lectured on a wide range of topics relating to therapy, postmodernism, psychopathology, human sexuality, and gender identity at institutions such as Thomas Jefferson University, Council for Relationships, Franklin Square Hospital, Temple University, and The Middleton Center. I welcome clients from all walks of life and have substantial experience working with sexual minorities including LGBTQ clients, kinky clients, and clients in non-traditional/nonmonogamous/polyamorous relationships. Outside work I enjoy spending time with family, martial arts, birding, visual arts, baseball, and volunteering at a wildlife hospital.
