Theresa Cao, PsyD

Licensed Psychologist PSY30728
About
I specialize in working with Individuals experiencing women’s issues (perinatal/postpartum challenges, martial issues, empowerment, codependency); young adults (transitions/change, identity formation, failure to launch); working professionals (burnout, purpose/fulfillment, work/life balance); and first generation Asian Americans (intergenerational trauma, empowerment/breaking the cycle, conflict with traditional parents).
My Approach
I believe a meaningful life begins with self-discovery in a therapeutic environment. My approach is warm, but challenging. This means that I encourage you to come as you are to explore and understand the emotional and cognitive patterns that have become barriers to life and relationships, and find new ways of thinking and being to overcome and thrive. I often understand your challenges through an attachment-based and existential-based lens, which means that I look at how you may be impacted by relational patterns and thoughts about your purpose/meaning of life. On the other hand, I utilize a lot of cognitive/perspective shifting and skills coaching to help establish change in your life.
Why I Love This Work
My career has been dedicated to helping individuals and their loved ones create meaning in their lives and understand who they are in relation to the world. I can say with absolute certainty that this is my true vocational path that reflects who I am. Helping others obtain a sense of fulfillment in their lives is what gives me a sense of meaning in mine.
What I Want For You
My goal is to gain an authentic understanding of your story, challenge the patterns that have held you captive, and help you find balance to reach a more fulfilling life. I hope to help you reach your highest capabilities, in order to engage in your life and your relationships in a positive manner.
My Specialties, Background and Personal Interests
I have over 12 years of clinical experience treating mental health issues and conducting psychological assessments. I have worked in a variety of clinical settings and with individuals across the lifespan, with most of my experience in outpatient behavioral health working with young adults, women, and older teens. I am most passionate about helping these individuals navigate important life goals such as establishing healthy relationships, increasing empowerment and self-care, exploring a sense of identity, navigating transitions/change, and balancing different life roles.
