Gary Hennemuth, PsyD

Licensed Psychologist, PSY33414

I work with adults and couples experiencing a range of personal and interpersonal challenges. Many of my clients find a deeply reflective space to explore relationship issues, and the patterns of behavior that lead to unfulfilling experiences with others. This work often includes looking to the past for clues, and identifying achievable solutions based on their goals, values, and self-image.

My approach

As a client centered therapist, my priority is finding a way to engage with each individual in a way that feels comfortable, validating, and attentive. Some of us prefer a contemplative space that allows the truth to arise gradually with gentle, curious exploration. Others appreciate a structured meeting with a focus on change and concrete objectives. As we build rapport, we will collaborate on what works best for you and use our time together to develop insight and perspective.

Why I love this work

I know from my own experience that there are too few resources to help us navigate the complexity of our worlds. I sometimes wish we had a manual to guide us through the daily challenges that present confusion, stress and difficult emotions. Self-discovery can be a powerful and rewarding experience. I love sharing in this process, and witnessing the growth that comes from learning who we are and who we may become.

What I want for you

I want for you to be your best self. Let’s identify what that really is and work towards it. This may initially take the shape of reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression. It may include some detective work that reveals assumptions and beliefs that don’t adequately serve you. Ideally, you will find a way to lasting change that increases connection, self-esteem, and a life built around your identity and values.

My specialties, background, and personal interests

I received my degree in Psychology from the Wright Institute in Berkeley, California after earning my BA in Psychology at SF State. My clinical experiences include community mental health and counseling. I have been trained in mediation and conflict resolution, and I really enjoy working with couples. Much of my training has favored psychodynamic approaches that consider attachment, the unconscious, and ego defenses to understand my clients. Furthermore, I bring Acceptance and Commitment and mindfulness strategies to work. Having learned to appreciate diversity and privilege from narrative and feminist lenses, I am curious to learn how social and structural forces impact my clients. I have worked in the trades and bring a DIY spirit to my many hobbies in fabrication and audio design.
